Guild responds to announcement of Scottish hospitality lockdown measures

Written by: David Foad
Andrew Bennett, chair of the Craft Guild of Chefs, has been moved to respond to the latest announcement by the Scottish Government about plans to effectively shut down parts of the hospitality industry.

He says: “Once again the hospitality industry has been hit the hardest with the announcement of Scottish lockdowns. The industry has proven it can open safely and worked hard to create consumer confidence and yet here we are again facing closures without putting in proper support or even a timeline for navigating the ongoing uncertainty.

"These businesses support not only their direct workers but an entire supply chain in the hospitality industry and without a robust plan of action from the government, I fear unequivocal damage to the UK’s culinary landscape for years to come.

"We will of course work with our members to support them and I urge any members affected by the news that need extra support at this time to reach out to us and use our resources. This includes charities such as the excellent Kelly’s Cause who are available for any chefs struggling with their mental health at this time.

"My concern as a result of this announcement is for both lives and livelihoods and I’d urge the government to consult more widely with industry bodies so we can collaboratively work to minimise the impact of Covid-19.”
