
ESS group executive chef wins UK heat of World Tapas Competition
He impressed the panel of judges with his inventive take on classic tapas, combining flair and flavour in a dish that stood out among fierce competition. The ‘vibrant flavours’ of Spain met the best of British culinary talent at the UK heat of the World Tapas Competition, held in Sheffield.
The judging panel included Spanish chef and TV personality Omar Allibhoy; Rupert Rowley, development chef from MSK Ingredients and chef Jasbir Kaur representing the World Competition. The trio praised the high standard of the entries, highlighting the growing influence of Spanish cuisine on the UK dining scene.
Paul Martin, director of MIDAS and organiser of the event, said: “The standard was phenomenal. We’re seeing a new wave of chefs who not only respect the traditions of tapas, but are pushing the boundaries of what it can be. Simon is a worthy winner and will be an outstanding representative for the UK in the finals.”
Alan Paton, executive chef at The Leys School was named runner-up and he will also travel to Spain. Elliott Tibbins, food developer at Mitchells and Butler, claimed third place.
