College student Beth Collings is celebrating after winning the Bronze award for England at the 6th annual Young Chef Olympiad final held in Kolkata, India.

Beth, 18, who lives in Brighton, is a third year chef student at Westminster Kingsway College’s School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts in London.

Beth was mentored throughout by college Chef Lecturer Chris Basten, former chair of the Craft Guild of Chefs.

He said: “I’m immensely proud of Beth for all her hard work and dedication, as well as her skill as a chef. It was an amazing opportunity for Beth to be representing not just the college, but her country in this international competition.

“She was professional, sharp and a credit to herself and the college.”

Beth added: “Chef Basten selected me to compete in the competition and has been so helpful – helping me work out my recipes and guiding me though the things I needed to do in the competition.

“I can’t believe I won the Bronze trophy. It’s been an amazing experience.”

The Olympiad pitted young chefs from 60 countries around the world in a series of timed cook-offs in cities across India, with only ten competitors qualifying for the Grand Final.

The panel of judges included internationally-renowned hospitality educator Professor David Foskett, former Savoy executive chef Anton Edelmann plus Brian Turner and Chris Galvin.
