Wales to host World Young Chef Young Waiter competition

Written by: Edward Waddell
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) will host the inaugural World Young Chef Young Waiter (WYCYW) competition.

Established in 1979, the World Young Chef Young Waiter competition aims to promote careers in hospitality and is open to all professional chefs and waiters under the age of 26 (as of 16th November 2022) who live and work in Wales.

Applications are now open and will close on 31st September. The 2022 Wales finals will take place on 31st October and 1st of November at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea with the winners competing in the world finals in Monaco on 15th-16th November.

Dr Jayne Griffith-Parry, programme manager for International Gastronomy Management at UWTSD, and chair of judges for WYCYW Wales, said: “The young talent we have in the hospitality industry is staggering. It’s been lovely to see the camaraderie and professional insight gained by those competing in other nations, so it is with great excitement that I open our Wales competition for applicants.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Welsh competitors to take their place on the World stage, build on current skills and enhance their careers for the future, whilst meeting with those within the wider world of gastronomy and hospitality.

“I welcome all aspiring chefs and waiters to enter the competition and take their chance against contemporaries... What an opportunity this is for Wales and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David as it supports the hospitality industry."
