UK ethical food and drink worth £4 billion

Written by: Admin
The market for ethical food and drink is now worth £4 billion in the UK, according to the latest research from Food from Britain.
Food from Britain's report 'Ethical Food & Drink 2008' found that certification and other ethical labels are now an everyday feature of products sold across Europe and North America, due to an increase in consumer awareness and wider distribution. The international Fairtrade market grew by 38% between 201 and 2006 to £1.4 billion, driven by the UK and the US which accounted for 61% of total sales. In contrast, the European Fairtrade market remains a niche market focused on hot drinks and bananas. However, strong growth is forecasted this year as retailers continue to widen their Fairtrade ranges. Retailers' attitudes to stocking ethical products has undergone dramatic change over the past 10 years, from stocking unbranded organic fruit and vegetables, to listing organic and Fairtrade brands in the 1990s , and now offering extensive private label ranges. Research reveals that retailers rank organic, local sourcing, biodegradable packaging and Fairtrade as their priorities in further developing their ethical ranges.
