Looking back at culinary history through the doors of the Royal Horticultural Halls

Written by: Admin
A new book due to be published in July reveals the fascinating history of the Royal Horticultural Halls from 1904 through a 100 year period, and includes a section on chefs and cookery.
This section relates directly to the Universal Cookery & Food Exhibitions, organised by the Universal Cookery & Food Association, which evolved into the present Craft Guild of Chefs. Written by René Dee, CEO
of The Westminster Collection, in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the book is entitled: Sweet Peas, Suffragettes and Showmen: And Events That Changed the World in the RHS Halls. These events took place in the RHS Hall on Vincent Square in Westminster for 25 years, and also used what is now known as Westminster Kingsway College, alongside it. These regularly featured some of the world's top culinary experts including renowned French chef Auguste Escoffier, chef to Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, Windsor Castle and Balmoral, The Hotel Cecil, Holborn Restaurant and the Café Royal; Swiss chef Herman Senn; Dutch chef Iwan Kriens; and Otto Goring, the man who built The Goring Hotel, which is currently celebrating its centenary. The book is available from the publishers Phillimore & Co Ltd at a pre-publication subscription offer of £20 – reduced from the RRP of £30, which includes having the purchaser's name printed in the book upon publication. It can be ordered through its website: www.phillimore.co.uk/acatalog/Special_Offers Now in its eighth year, The Westminster Collection is a not for profit company that represents a group of venue and event facilities located solely within the Borough of Westminster.
