Bennett commented: “It seems that the government has finally woken up following huge pressure from our industry. We welcome news of the Chancellor’s intervention in this crisis but urge him to act quickly and decisively.

“Overnight we have seen the voluntary closures of a large number of restaurants, pubs and hotels, and with it no doubt the loss of many livelihood and jobs.

“Promises have been made, now we need to see immediate action. If that means altering planning rules so restaurants and bars can act as takeaways, change them quickly. Let’s just hope this is not too little too late.”
