Members of parliament nominated 81 South Asian restaurants for the competition. These restaurants were then shortlisted down to 13, including Vivasa Restaurant in Maidenhead that was nominated by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Dishes were presented to a panel of ten judges and rated for flavour and presentation. The judging panel was chaired by Ainsley Harriott and included Great British Bake Off alumnus Chetna Makan. The winning dish was sikandari royal lamb, which was cooked by Kuti’s Brasserie executive chef Ravi Rao.

Bercow said: "Royston Smith MP has done a great public service in recommending Kuti's Brasserie, a worthy recipient of the Tiffin Cup 2019."  

Harriott, the television chef, noted: "We have tasted some wonderful food tonight. To all of the finalists, tap yourselves in the back because you have made it so far. To our winner Kuti’s Brasserie, congratulation on a splendid dish.”

Kuti Miah has run the Kuti Brasserie restaurant for over 35 years. He said: “I am incredibly proud of my city, and I present this trophy to the people of Southampton. The trophy we won today in Parliament presented by John Bercow will take pride of place in the restaurant.”

To celebrate the victory Kuti’s brasserie will hold a celebratory gourmet dinner on 21 July, allowing guests to taste the winning dish.
