Hospitality Action relaunches Addiction Awareness Programme

Written by: Edward Waddell
For many years Hospitality Action has run a seminar programme for college students and chefs that focuses on the dangers of addiction in the hospitality industry.

Hospitality Action is a charity that supports the UK’s Hospitality industry workers when they find themselves in a crisis. Emergency grants are available for those in need.

Hospitality Action has released a short video that takes an honest look at the dangers of addiction in the hospitality industry.

Mitchelin-starred chef Phil Howard shares his own experiences with addiction: “The truth is that prior to that success I had to face my own serious addiction problems, having developed a big addiction to crack cocaine. I have become very aware of how important it is to try and address those issues, before they become a problem.

“It’s fair to say the hospitality industry is a ‘work hard play hard’ environment and its so important that you keep an eye out for yourself and your colleagues for the various pitfalls, whether its gambling, traditionally drugs, alcohol or even energy drinks.

“The reality is if you don’t address them the cost could be severe, bob and even possibly life.”

Other Mitchelin-starred chefs such as Tom Kerridge have also experienced addiction. He suffered with an alcohol addiction, which was influenced the ‘work hard play hard’ environment in the hospitality industry.
