Celebrating the best of British beef

Written by: Edward Waddell
Great British Beef Week, the national event that celebrates Red Tractor Assured British beef, will take place for its 12th year this April.

Kicking off on St George’s Day (23 April), the week-long celebration has been timed to conclude with the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Great British Beef Week (GBBW) is the brainchild of Ladies in Beef, a voluntary organisation of female beef farmers, founded by Devon beef producer Jilly Greed and NFU president Minette Batters.

GBBW is backed by farmers, processors, supermarkets, butchers, farm shops, pubs, and restaurants alike, featuring on pack, in-store, on menu. Environmental sustainability is the core theme for this year’s campaign, once again supported and underpinned by evidence and data provided by AHDB.

The aim is to highlight how British beef farmers work tirelessly to produce some of the most sustainable beef in the world. Real-life farm stories and infographics will be central in sharing the facts about British beef production and its positive environmental credentials.

Greed said: “Great British Beef Week is all about giving our UK beef farmers the opportunity to share their stories and showcase the work they do to produce such an exceptional nutritious product. Britain has the perfect climate conditions, with plentiful rain and sunshine to nurture our pastures, valleys and moorlands, enabling us to produce beef sustainably, with a carbon footprint half the global average.

“Our grass-based beef production supports biodiversity of wildlife and plants such as herbal leys, supports forests, hedgerows, and marshes. With our grasslands absorbing more carbon from the atmosphere than slow growing forests. It really is fantastic to see the British beef industry coming together to celebrate our environmentally sustainable beef, world renowned for its great taste, quality and nutritional benefits including vitamin B12, iron and protein.”
