Research reveals Brits are ‘poshing up’ their picnics

Written by: Edward Waddell
New research by British Lion eggs suggests that as many as seven in ten Brits (73%) have made more effort with their picnics in recent years, with 46% attempting to impress friends by bringing artisan goodies.

Four in ten (40%) have rustled up cakes from scratch, while 25% bring posh scotch eggs and almost half (48%) like to bring healthy homemade salads. Other popular items include: strawberries & cream (37%), egg mayo sandwiches (36%), scones & jam (30%), houmous & olives (29%) as well as a homemade quiche (28%).

The research found that Brits are planning to enjoy an average of four picnics this summer. Four in ten (41%) agree that picnics are one of the best parts of the summer. Single-use containers (33%) and single use plastic cups (33%) are a ‘picnic no-no’. A fifth (20%) also felt British ingredients were important.

This research among 2,000 UK adults was commissioned by British Lion Eggs and conducted by Perspectus Global in May 2023.

Andrew Joret, spokesperson for British Lion Eggs, said: “It seems like the picnic is having a ‘moment’ this summer, with people embracing the outdoor tradition and making it an event. Eggs are a favourite ingredient, featuring heavily in the list of picnic must haves – a cost-effective, versatile British ingredient to feed a crowd.”
