Craft Guild Innovation Award winner hosts food waste fundraiser dinner

Written by: Katie Imms
Doug McMaster – chef proprietor of zero-waste restaurant, Silo (Brighton) and the Craft Guild 2018 Innovation Award winner – is hosting a one-off fundraiser dinner to celebrate food waste charity, FareShare Sussex’s 15-year anniversary.

Having partnered earlier this year, Silo already adds a discretionary £1 donation to customers’ bills, and hopes the dinner will raise additional funds to help “tackle food waste and fight hunger across Sussex and the wider region.”

Taking place at the city centre restaurant on 22 November, the five-course meal will be made from surplus FareShare Sussex food as well as locally sourced produce. Bio-dynamic wine from a local farmer will also be served.

McMaster said: “Tackling food waste is a two-sided coin. Silo’s is a model that prevents waste from the outset, and FareShare ensures the surplus created by the wider food industry does not end up in the bin.

“We’re extremely grateful to partner with FareShare Sussex, knowing that we can see both sides to better understand the bigger picture. Our partnership will serve as a reminder of why we do what we do.”

As well as a raffle, author and campaigner Tristam Stuart will be attending, sharing his insight and expertise on the environmental and social impact of food waste.

Development manager at FareShare Sussex, Rachel Carless, commented: “Since opening 15 years ago, FareShare Sussex has helped, and continues to feed, thousands each and every week – a phenomenal achievement which is testament to the charity’s commitment to fighting hunger and reducing food waste.

“We do a great job helping people with food insecurity in our communities - providing meals to vulnerable people from all walks of life, whether children, elderly, homeless, or victims of domestic abuse.

“But we know there is a demand for greater support, which is why we are so grateful to Silo for its incredible generosity in supporting our mission and hosting the event.

“In Sussex, we have ambitious growth plans and aim to triple the amount of food redistributed over the next three years, so that we can help feed more people across the region who vitally need it.

“We encourage anyone interested in helping the vulnerable in their community to join us at Silo, to celebrate 15 years of fighting hunger in Sussex – any support can make a real difference.”
