CAFÉ SPICE NAMASTE NAMED LONDON SUSTAINABILITY CHAMPION
Cafe Spice Namaste, Cyrus and Pervin Todiwala's Indian restaurant in Tower Hill, walked away with not one, but two 'Green Oscars' at the Corporation of London's Sustainable City Awards held last Thursday, 3rd February 2011, at Mansion House.
In a competition where contenders included FTSE 100 corporations, Café Spice Namaste won the prestigious London Chamber of Commerce Leadership in Sustainability Award, with chef patron Cyrus Todiwala cited for his consistent efforts and dedication to sustainability and the environment. Cyrus and Pervin Todiwala are well known for championing local British suppliers and produce, including products from North Ronaldsay in Scotland, fresh produce and seafood from Jersey and extra virgin rapeseed oil from Kent. Café Spice Namaste is also a member of the Marine Conservation Society and an honorary member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association. Cyrus said: "I am very honored to receive these awards which cap years of hard work and sometimes going against the tide or investing more than a small business like ours can easily afford. But sustainability is what I have lived and breathed since I was a kid in India. It's not exceptional to want to sustain resources, it's a necessity. This award is also a great gain for our sector and small businesses. We're showing others that it can be done and restaurants are leading the way. This is just the beginning." Mark Linehan, managing director of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, said: "Cafe Spice is a true pioneer among sustainable restaurants and an example to others that not only is sustainability good for the planet it is also good for business. The SRA is delighted to see Cafe Spice recognised for its long term commitment to sustainability."
