Spring 2012: Welcome

Written by: Admin
I write this with a tinge of sadness, as since the last Stockpot we have lost two of our most loyal and longest serving members in Winnie Myers and Artur Voggenberger. Both were active members of the London division and worked tirelessly for the good of the Craft Guild and formally the Cookery & Food Association, with Winnie herself being our national chairman from 1986-88. Our tribute to both is on page 19.
This year we again have the Winnie Myers Afternoon Tea Challenge giving you a chance to enter this competition and produce the best afternoon tea pastries and win some great prizes, and full details are on our website.

Moving on as both Winnie and Artur would have wanted, we are fast approaching Hotelympia 2012 and our Culinary Academy team manager Fergus Martin has as ever been busy preparing the team for a wide range of entries as well as La Parade des Chefs. We wish all competitors the very best. Please take time to visit us on our stand, S1043, meet some of the team, catch up, renew membership, or just to take time out from wandering around.

Grab a chance to see our Skillery in action with some great chefs demonstrating and showing the wider use of modern food trends. We have just had the final of Alaska Seafood’s recipe challenge where Yann Baril from London Hilton Park Lane triumphed and he will be demonstrating his winning menu at the show.

We fast approach our AGM, which will be held at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington. If you have not yet booked, please take time to reserve your place at the AGM or the Honours & Awards lunch that follows. As ever we are always looking for new ideas and new blood to join us on the committee, so if you believe you can help add that little extra, please let us know.

We are also not too far away from our annual awards, which this year are being held at Wembley Stadium on June 13, so now is your chance to make a difference and nominate. The only reason someone you know has not received one is purely because you have not nominated them!

Earlier this year we opened a Channel Islands division and there are many thanks to go round for the time and effort involved in achieving this goal. With the passion of many chefs on the islands who wanted this to get off the ground, it has finally happened. Our own Steve Scuffell and Eileen Buicke-Kelly of Highlands College Jersey have worked so hard over the last few months and already we have had features on the BBC.

The Wessex Salon Culinaire moves to Brockenhurst College in April and there is still time to enter the competitions. This year also sees the 10th anniversary of the Graduate Awards, so look around your kitchens and nominate a young chef and make a difference to them and their career. And of course our National Chef of the Year 2012 is well underway. It’s great to see Phil Howard of The Square agree to be our chairman of judges this year and we thank him for agreeing to do this for us.

Last but not least, the Craft Guild is excited about its new initiative, the Universal Cookery & Food Festival planned for September (see page 50). More will be made known soon ... so watch this space. All it remains is for me to wish you all a great start to the summer months.
