Yummy Pub Co launches Chef Academy
The academy will welcome seven chefs from different backgrounds and with mixed levels of kitchen experience to work, learn and develop in busy kitchens across the company’s four London pubs.
The first chef is already in place; 25-year-old Josh Astarita was without a home or a job, he's now on his way to becoming a fully fledged Yummy chef.
Anthony Pender, co-owner of Yummy Pub Co, said: “It’s about creating opportunity and nurturing talent. It’s already working. Within less than 24 hours since we launched the academy we’ve been inundated with messages from aspiring chefs. The best part about it is that we genuinely don’t care about their level of experience, it’s about their passion, not their past.”
Each chef will be given a mentor and trained within the Yummy Academy, a company-wide training scheme that is mapped against the apprenticeship framework and accredited by the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII). They will be introduced to each aspect of the kitchen including health and safety, planning and ordering, innovation and development of dishes as well as the obvious one – cooking.
Jason Rowlands, co-owner and executive chef of Yummy, added: “Let me make this clear – this is NOT just another job ad. Our Chef Academy trainees will all live together above Somers Town Coffee House with the purpose of sharing their talent and immersing themselves in all things food, I like to think of it as the Yummy food hub!
"The aim is to take newbie chefs and give them an all-around, hands-on skill set. This will allow them to be able to run their own kitchens within 18 months and eventually, we’d like to see them start their own business, if that’s their goal.
“Here’s the most important bit though - it’s going to be FUN! We’ll take them on trips out to our country pubs, let them play around with ingredients, go on foraging adventures in the wild and they’ll get the chance to work with some top UK pub chef talent.”
Chefs who want to apply for The Chef Academy can email Jason at [email protected] and are encouraged to let their personality shine. No CV required, all that’s requested is a few words about who they are, why they love cooking and a photo of the applicant working in a kitchen (doesn’t matter if it’s in college, at their house or in a professional kitchen). The candidates will be announced in the next few weeks.
