For more than two decades, the Craft Guild of Chefs Graduate Awards have stood as one of the most respected stepping stones for rising culinary talent.

As someone who has watched hundreds of young chefs come through the process and witnessed the impact it has had on their confidence, skill and careers, I know first-hand how valuable this programme is.

Whether you're a young chef considering entering or a senior chef thinking about putting a team member forward, here are eight positive ways the Graduate Awards continue to shape our industry. Entries to the Graduate Awards will close on Tuesday 31st March 2026.

Building solid culinary foundations

Young chefs today are hungry for development, and the Graduate Awards offer that opportunity outside of their workplaces. The programme tests and strengthens classical skills, something I’ve always believed is key for a successful culinary career.

Whatever stage they get to, entrants leave with sharper classical techniques, greater creativity in their own menus and a deeper understanding of the craft that underpins every great kitchen.

Many chefs tell me the Graduate Awards changed the way they see their own potential. The process pushes them outside their comfort zone in the best possible way. When a young chef completes the heats or final, they realise they’re capable of far more than they initially thought. That boost in confidence stays with them long after the event is over.

With having Chairs of Examiners Sally Abé and Sarah Frankland at the helm of the Kitchen and Pastry Graduate Awards, they will be offering support and guidance at each stage. Both chefs are known for the confidence they inspire in young chefs and I’m really looking forward to working with them both this year.

In a challenging time for recruitment, providing your young chefs with development opportunities is so important. Senior chefs who put forward a young member of their brigade often tell me it strengthens their loyalty and boosts morale in the kitchen.

Showing a young chef that you believe in them and are investing in their growth with your mentorship time, creates a positive culture that supports future retention. It’s also a great way to PR your own restaurant.

The Awards are designed to stretch ambition. Once a chef achieves the Graduate Award, they often go on to be part of major competitions such as Young National Chef of the Year, take on new roles in their kitchen, or push for the next step in their culinary journey. These aren’t just candidates in the Graduate Awards, they will become the next generation of head chefs, mentors and leaders.
