Raymond Blanc calls on restaurants to turn the lights out for Earth Hour
The Sustainable Restaurant Association has teamed up with WWF to put the candlelit dinners on the menu from 8:30pm on 19th March and is calling on restaurants to join the global event.
Brasserie Blanc, The Savoy and OXO Tower Restaurant are amongst the groups and restaurants already signed up.
Raymond Blanc, president of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, which runs Food Made Good, said: “Thousands of restaurants, from Michelin-star to fish and chips shops are amongst those working with Food Made Good, demonstrating that good food can be produced sustainably.
“I’m extremely proud that many of these restaurants will be switching off their lights for WWF’s Earth Hour to showcase how easy it is to cook some delicious food that’s good for you and the planet, while reminding us that together we have the power to make change happen. And we already are.”
All restaurants have to do is open as usual, turn the lights off and light some candles. Daylesford in the Cotswolds and Battlesteads in Northumberland will both inspire their diners with some star-gazing. Battlesteads is the only restaurant with an observatory – in a Dark Sky National Park.
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, founder of River Cottage, a Food Made Good Three Star rated restaurant, said: “The food we eat has a significant impact not just on our health but also on the health of our planet.
“We can all make small changes to our eating habits that will have a lasting effect on the future of our planet. WWF’s Earth Hour is the perfect opportunity to start these changes, enjoy great sustainable food and celebrate our love for the planet while also putting a spotlight on the issues affecting its future.”
Participating restaurants will receive a full pack of assets to help them promote their event to diners and both the SRA and WWF will be promoting all of the participating restaurants on their websites and on social media. Interested restaurants should contact Aimee Hartley at [email protected]
