Marine Conservation Society launches sustainable seafood scheme for restaurants

Written by: Isabel Finch
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) charity has launched a scheme for restaurants to raise awareness of seafood sustainability in partnership with Fish2fork, the rating organisation based on the sustainability of restaurant seafood.

The Change for Fish scheme will see restaurants donate money from seafood dish sales to a charity which promotes sustainable seafood.

Sanjay Mitra, MCS corporate partnership manager, said: “In a recent assessment of eleven high street restaurant chains and pubs we found that it’s a lack of information about the sources of seafood that is one of the biggest barriers for diners trying to eat seafood sustainably.

“We believe the Change for Fish scheme will highlight the good dishes and encourage diners to choose those ahead of others where less information is available.”

MCS and Fish2Fork will work closely with restaurants before becoming a Change for Fish eatery to identify red listed species on the menu and ensure they are avoided.

Restaurants will receive support through MCS and Fish2Fork’s networks of social media supporters and e-news subscribers, amounting to near 200,000 potential customers.

Mitra said: “We’re keen to raise the profile of restaurants and pubs taking part in the scheme because that way customers who want to make sustainable choices will know the best places to eat fish.”

Eateries that participate will feature on the MCS website and will be listed on the charity’s Good Beach Guide and the Good Fish Guide app.
