Lancaster and York chefs battle for ‘War of the Roses’ culinary title

Written by: Katie Imms
Steven Smith (The Freemasons, Lancashire) will go head-to-head with Le Cochon Aveugle’s Josh Overington to be named the winner of this year’s ‘War of the Roses’ culinary battle.

Inspired by the civil war between York and Lancaster in C15, the annual event sees Smith pitch himself against a Yorkshire-based chef. Unaware who prepared which dish, diners then vote for their favourite three-course meal to decide the winner.

This year’s event will take place 27 November at The Freemasons. Chef organiser, Smith, commented: “I’m really looking forward to having Josh and his team representing Yorkshire for this event.

“We’ve had a lot of fun with the ‘War of the Roses’ over the last few years, as our customers appreciate being able to try two different styles of cooking under one roof.

“There’s always a bit of friendly rivalry between the two counties, which adds to the occasion, and of course we’ll be looking for Lancashire to walk away the victor on the night.”

Overington added: “I am absolutely delighted to have been asked by Steven to take part in the ‘War of the Roses’ this year because I know it’s always a really popular event.

“I know Lancaster won the final battle in the original wars, but let’s hope York can be victorious this time round.”

Tickets cost £70 p.p. or £110 to include a wine package. For more information or to book, visit https://www.freemasonsatwiswell.com/events/view/87/war-of-the-roses-2018.
