Written by: Edward Waddell
The Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) Chef Showcase, which took place at the Hotel, Restaurant & Catering show at ExCeL London during Food Drink & Hospitality week, crowned Kerrey Healey and Tasha Day from Berrywood Hospital (Northampton Health Foundation Trust) as the Best-in-Class winners achieving a silver medal.

The competition involved five teams from England and one from Scotland. Together they all medalled at this prestigious international event, each team achieving high scores from the chef judges across the hospitality industry.

Sosana Sukhan and Amanda Barber from Stepping Hill Hospital (Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS), were awarded a silver medal and also picked up the newly created Causeway Award, for the best dish of the day. The award is named in memory of past winner Darren Taggart from Northern Ireland, who was a past Best-in-Class winner.

A silver medal and the hygiene award went to Alan Dougan and Jim Dougan from NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Other silver medals were awarded to Chris Dopico Alles and Angelika Purtak from Serco at University Hospital Southampton as well as Daniel Freeman and Sunny Shahi from Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospitals.

Current NHS Chef of the Year winners Jo Omolo from Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and Ned Rusev from Guys and St. Thomas Foundation Trust combined once again to conjure up a well-earned bronze medal.

Phil Shelley said: “The HCA Chef Showcase continues to shine a light on our chefs, their skills and knowledge of cost control, balanced menus and innovation.”
