Three student chefs from Westminster Kingsway College have been awarded first, second and third place at the South African Cuisine Young Chef of the Year competition final.

Jordon Powell, 18, was named winner and second and third place were awarded to Rick Owens and Amy Simmonds.

Powell said: “Before the competition began I was very nervous, after that the nerves went away once I got into the kitchen and started cooking. Luckily everything went to plan and I was very happy with how my dishes went out to the judges.

“Overall it was a very emotional day but so worth all the work. I’m excited to continue learning about the cuisine in South Africa.”

Powell, who has now joined Alyn Williams at The Westbury in Mayfair, will be flying out to train in one of South Africa’s top restaurants later this year, as part of the prize.

The three chefs from the college competed in a cook-off against eight other UK finalists under 25-years-old and either studying or working in the food industry.

Finalists were judged by a panel which included Jose Souto, chef lecturer and author, Sophie Michell, television chef and author, Aggie Mackenzie, presenter and journalist, and Petrus Madutlela, chef patron at The Poet at Matfield.

The competition aims to raise awareness of the use of South African fruit as ingredients and the importance of fruit farming to the country and its rural communities.
