Nestle Professional launches online nutrition course for catering students

Written by: Admin
An online course that aims to provide catering college students with knowledge of nutrition, health and wellness has been launched by Nestlé Professional and the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF).
The organisations joined forces to develop the six-module course, which covers the following topics: eating and drinking well, energy and nutrients, nutritional needs of the individual, diet and lifestyle, understanding food labels and cat ring for health. The course is suitable for both individual learning and teaching by a college lecturer with each of the six modules taking about 20 minutes to complete. Upon completion of all six modules, students will have the option of taking a short test. If they pass the test, students will receive a BNF certificate indicating that they have passed a basic course in nutrition, health and wellness. Neil Stephens, managing director of Nestlé Professional explained more about the partnership: "Healthy eating is a trend that has been gaining momentum over recent years but is now being further propelled by a greater desire for transparency, evident across society as a whole. "The implications this has on the hospitality industry – and on those about to embark on careers in the hospitality industry – are significant. With the Government's Public Health Responsibility Deal really coming to the fore this year, there's really no escaping the fundamental need for everyone working in the industry to have at the very least, a basic understanding of nutrition, health and wellness. "Nestlé Professional, through its Toque d'Or programme, is committed to encouraging the development of students' skills in this area and to this end; we're delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with the British Nutrition Foundation." Roy Ballam, education programme manager at the British Nutrition Foundation added: "The British Nutrition Foundation has a valuable role to play in providing the necessary resources to engage individuals in food education. Providing catering students with the necessary skills and information related to food and nutrition will ensure that they can better engaged with public health initiatives, be that calorie labelling through to the provenance of ingredients." Nestlé Professional will pay for the first 500 students to take the course. After that there will be a £10 charge per student, payable directly to the BNF.
