The nation's Best Foodservice Sausage of the Year crowned

Written by: Admin
A brand new sausage concept has been crowned Sausage of the Year 2012.
The 'Premium Pork Sausage with Chorizo and Olive Oil', from Scan Foods UK, includes a process that replaces the saturated fat with extra virgin olive oil. On average the fat content is reduced by 30%, without affecting flavour or juiciness. The finalists – first, second and third place in the competitions five categories – were whittled down last month from over 200 entries. The final 15, which all achieved gold award status in the first round, were taste tested and scored by more than 30 guest judges. The results were incredibly close but Scan Foods' entry, which also won the 'Best Innovative Pork Sausage' category, had the highest combined score. Thomas Olander, managing director for Scan Foods in the UK said: "We're delighted to have received this recognition from BPEX. This really is the 'Rolls Royce' in sausages with the distinct appeal of the Mediterranean and the added benefit of reduced saturated fat. Perceived 'bad' saturated fats are replaced with the goodness of extra virgin olive oil meaning that sausage consumers not only get a fantastic new sausage but it will be better for them too." The next step for Scan Foods is to focus on national distribution for its Champion sausage, as well as looking to extend the concept across its product range, including meat balls. BPEX foodservice trade manager, Tony Goodger, said: "As British Sausage Week approaches (5-11 November) there is no better time to celebrate the very best varieties available on menus today."
