The winners for the 2011 Observer Monthly Awards were announced at a ceremony in London this week with Michel Roux Senior, Heston Blumenthal and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall among the winners.
The awards, now in their eighth year, celebrate the best in British food and produce, from independent producers to the UK's most revered chefs. Michel Roux Senior took home the lifetime achievement award and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall won food personality of the year. Commenting on winning the food personality award, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall said: "I'm thrilled to have been given this award, particularly as it comes from OFM readers – a highly discerning bunch. The magazine and its readers have championed the idea that the way we choose to eat has massive consequences, first for us as individuals, but also for our communities and ultimately for the sustainability of food production on the whole planet. "That used to be a fringe concept, but now, thanks to campaigning journalism and changing public opinion, governments and industrial food producers are beginning to understand. They are beginning to realise that their whole future, as well as ours, depends on making food production sustainable now, not postponing the issue indefinitely." Other winners included: Lifetime achievement: Michel Roux Senior Best restaurant: Dinner by Heston Blumenthal Food personality: Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall Best place to drink: Mark's Bar, HIX, London Best newcomer: Maltby Street, London Outstanding contribution: Tristram Stuart, sustainability campaigner Young chef of the year: Paul Foster, Head Chef, Tuddenham Mill, Suffolk Best Sunday lunch: Bull & Last, Kentish Town, London Best ethical restaurant: The Ethicurean, North Somerset
