JD Wetherspoon staff to grind fresh coffee beans as pubs prepare to sell filter coffee

Written by: Admin
Italian coffee company, Lavazza, is adding a freshly-ground filter coffee to its offering across all 860 JD Wetherspoon pubs.

Lavazza is claiming a UK industry first on this scale which will see Wetherspoon staff grind fresh Tierra Rainforest Alliance beans immediately prior to brewing.

Filter coffee, the most popular way to consume coffee in the US, has previously had a reputation for poor quality.

Now thanks to improved technology it is experiencing a revival with UK consumers who are looking for a healthier, less-milky alternative to cappuccinos and lattes (a black cup of filter coffee contains just four calories and adding a splash of milk only makes it 16 calories).

Barry Kither from Lavazza UK, said: “We’ve been trialling filtered coffee in a number of JD Wetherspoon pubs since August and the consumer response has been fantastic. The quality of the beans is exactly the same as we use for espresso-based drinks meaning customers can now enjoy the unmistakeable quality of Lavazza whether they choose a cappuccino or a filter coffee.”

All pubs will be equipped with an advanced filter coffee system including a grinder set to achieve the ideal grind; a brewer which uses vacuum technology to insulate the coffee avoiding the quality damaging application of heat; and a server which holds the brew at its optimum quality.
