Abdul Yaseen, head chef at the Cinnamon Kitchen restaurant in London, has won the British BBQ Championships 2011.
Yaseen lifted the trophy at the final on July 31st at the annual contest, held at Laverstoke Park Farm's Field to Fork Festival, in association with Sainsburys. Yaseen triumphed over 11 other contestants including Atul Kochhar from the Michelin-starred Benares, Tristan Welch from Launceston Place, Matt Bishop from Maze Grill and last year's winner Bruno Loubet of Bistrot Bruno Loubet. His winning dish included Rajasthan royal roast rack of lamb and charred pork belly with honey mustard and kokum berries. Joint second place went to Bruno Loubet and Tristan Welch and joint third place was given to Atul Kochhar and Cesar Garcia from Iberica. As well as lifting the trophy for Cinnamon Kitchen, Yaseen also took home £1000 to give to a charity of his choice, deciding to split the prize between Save A Child (a charity dedicated to helping deprived children in Delhi, Calcutta and West Bengal) and Save The Children (the world's leading independent organisation for children). He commented on his win: "It's an absolute honour to win the trophy back for Cinnamon Kitchen at the British BBQ Championships. It gave me a chance to showcase Cinnamon Kitchen's pioneering and original take on the British BBQ and I feel privileged to donate the money to two wonderful children's charities." Throughout August, to celebrate his success, Yaseen will be adding the winning Rajasthan lamb dish to the Cinnamon Kitchen's menu.
