The product is designed to offer small businesses and individuals, from childminders to mobile workers such as home carers and mobile caterers, access to food safety and hygiene products in a small, compact and transportable pack.

The award, launched earlier this year, recognises the best ideas for improving food safety from dedicated practitioners who work in the industry.

The judging panel included Lord Jeff Rooker, chair of the Food Standards Agency and celebrity chefs Chris and James Tanner, Graham Jukes, CIEH chief executive and David Edwards, director of NSF International.

Commenting, Jane Washbrook, said: “I am confident the FOODSAFEKIT promotes good food safety practice, and can play an important role in protecting public health. I was so thrilled to reach the final. I really felt that to talk about my product on ‘judgment day’ was a great achievement and a career highlight. All I wanted to do was to present the FOODSAFEKIT to the best of my ability and hope the judges liked it too.”

While she was nervous presenting her product at the final, the judges, she says, made her feel very comfortable.

“Winning the award is brilliant and I am looking forward to working with the team in promoting the product. I want to work with the CIEH and NSF commercial teams to market the FOODSAFEKIT to a variety of different organisations. It would be great if I was attending an outdoor event and whilst ordering my burger, I spotted a FOODSAFEKIT located in a prime position in the food preparation area.”

Graham Jukes, CIEH chief executive, added: “All the judges were very impressed with the high standards of participants. We were looking for a product that would make a positive contribution to protecting and improving public health but was innovative and practical too. Jane really impressed the judges with her commitment, enthusiasm and her overall confidence in the product.”
