Chefs urged to highlight PGI status on menus

Written by: Admin
PGI Welsh Lamb is urging chefs across the UK who serve Welsh Lamb in their restaurants to reference its PGI status on their menus.

With restaurant customers increasingly demanding home-grown quality produce with a heritage and a traceable history after recent scares, clearly referencing PGI and making it visible to patrons will reassure customers as to the origin of the meat they are ordering.

Pip Gill from Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC), the organisation behind PGI Welsh Lamb, said: “Restaurant customers are becoming increasingly discerning, caring more and more about their food’s origins especially since the issue has been highlighted in the press. Using Welsh Lamb’s PGI status as a guarantee of quality and traceability can make all the difference to the appeal of a menu.

“Only PGI Welsh Lamb is guaranteed to be sourced from lambs born and reared in Wales with all the taste that being grazed on the lush green grass of the countryside offers. Customers will also like the fact that Welsh Lamb can be from the farm to the fork across the whole of the UK in a matter of days.

“Using PGI Welsh Lamb is a distinguishing characteristic which marks a menu out as a sign of quality and we would encourage chefs to include it when they are looking at refreshing their dishes and menus for the summer.”

Already celebrity chefs from Jamie Oliver to Richard Corrigan have chosen PGI Welsh Lamb for special occasions, such as the G20 summit in London, the Ryder Cup, Wimbledon and a special dinner to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
