The final of the Champagne Jacquart Rising Stars trophy took place yesterday at the Restaurant Show.
Seven teams of young chefs and sommeliers, from top restaurants in the UK, competed in a bid to be crowned the Rising Stars of 2011. Chefs took part in a two hour cooking session, in which they had to create a three-course meal, while the sommeliers' assessment included a blind tasting of the Jacquart range and an interview with the judges on their knowledge of wine and service. The sommeliers were then required to pour eight equal glasses from a single bottle of Jacquart Brut Mosaïque. The trophy was won by chef Lindsay Mackay and sommelier Tobias Wetzler from the Carnegie club at Skibo castle in Scotland, with Leonid Semakin and Matthew Mawtus from 1 Lombard Street being runners up. It was the first time that both winners had participated in a competition together. Tobias said: "This is incredible news after several weeks of hard work. We had the idea of basing our menu on a selection of canapés which we developed into the dishes' commented Lindsay. 'I am very excited to have won; this was a great competition and allowed me to learn so much about champagne." Laurent Reinteau CEO of Jacquart commented: 'It is fundamental for us as a young champagne brand to support the young and upcoming stars of tomorrow and I am very happy that Lindsay and Tobias won. They did an incredible job."
