Written by: Isabel Finch
The finalists of the Brakes Scotland 2017 Student Chef Challenge have been announced, with student chefs from South Lanarkshire College, Glasgow City College, Scotland’s Rural College and Fife College set to compete in the live cook-off final in June.

The teams of three will have to produce a three-course menu in one hour and 45 minutes at the final, taking place at Glasgow City College.

To reach the final, the college teams were required to submit a menu with method and costed list of ingredients for the paper judging round by a panel led by Kevin MacGilliyray, regional executive of Macdonalds Hotels.

Derek Lockett, development chef for Brakes Scotland and Neil Thomson, the Federation of Chefs Scotland chairman, were also on the panel.

Judge Lockett said: “The standard of the students this year has been great and it’s great to see that the industry has some fantastic talent coming through.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing how they perform against each other in the final.”

The competition, supported by HIT Scotland and the Federation of Chefs Scotland, will award the winning team with a trip to Gran Rapids, a three-day work experience placement at Gleneagles resort, and a year’s membership tot the Federation of Chefs Scotland.
