Asian & Oriental cuisine to tackle youth unemployment with new initiative

Written by: Admin
Minister for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning John Hayes MP has today launched five new Asian & Oriental Centres of Excellence aimed at boosting chef skills.
This long-term initiative, led by the Hospitality Guild and People 1st, will train unemployed people to become skilled chefs. The project will help Asian & Oriental restaurant owners adapt to the new immigration cap which restricts their ability to recruit chefs from outside the EU. Recruits will take part in a six-week pre-employment programme, which will include training and work experience with an employer and will result in a qualification - the Level 1 Award in Introduction to Employment in the Hospitality Industry. At the end of this programme they are also guaranteed an interview with a prospective employer for either a job or a paid apprenticeship in Indian, Bangladeshi, Chinese or Thai cuisine. Employers will be able to easily find suitable recruits who have completed the programme by viewing their CVs on the 'Talent Search' section on uksp.co.uk – People 1st's website for careers, jobs, qualifications, funding and training opportunities in hospitality, passenger transport, travel and tourism. John Hayes MP said: "These centres will help thousands of young unemployed people get the training they need to improve their job prospects, by giving them the confidence and skills required for a successful career in Asian and Oriental cuisine." Annette Allmark, Centres of Excellence Manager at the Hospitality Guild, said: "Research has shown that apprentices become productive quickly and can help make a business more competitive, reduce staff turnover, and lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce." Asian & Oriental businesses that have already reaped the benefits of taking on an apprentice include Patara Fine Thai Dining, part of the S&P Group. Chief executive officer, Saipin Lee, said: "Recruiting an apprentice has certainly helped us to overcome some of the restrictions placed by the recent immigration cap. Apprentices work for us and I would recommend that more hospitality businesses recruit and develop an apprentice. They have passion and love to learn, and we enjoy seeing them grow."
