Christmas Day dining out 'on the rise'

The amount of people that dined out of home for their Christmas Day dinner increased by 43% last year, according to data from online booking service OpenTable.

The company said the results continued the yearly trend that sees Britons opt for a pub or restaurant on 25 December over their kitchens and living rooms.

Data showed the classic British Christmas dinner to be the most popular choice among diners, although more untraditional choices such as Italian, Indian and French also fell into the top selections.

Adrian Valeriano, VP EMEA, OpenTable, said: "Increasingly we are seeing the ‘turkey carvers’ handing over the Christmas reigns and dining out with friends and family on Christmas Day.

“Precious time relaxing and enjoying delicious, professionally prepared food takes away any pressures that come with creating a home cooked meal.

“Plus if we want to forgo the traditional Christmas dinner for a curry or pasta, then we can. With a wealth of great restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, diners are now taking full advantage of the options available to them.”
