Celebrity chefs including Angela Hartnett, Asma Khan and Heston Blumenthal are supporting Action Against Hunger’s ‘Love Food Give Food’ campaign.

Asma Khan, ‘Star’ of Netflix’s Chef’s Table, has been supporting Action Against Hunger for many years and her restaurant, Darjeeling Express, will be taking part this year.

She said: “Growing up in India, I was privileged to never face hunger. Sadly, that isn’t the case for more than a quarter of the world’s population. Even the amazing ladies in my own kitchen, for many of them, sleeping on a full stomach was a luxury that they didn’t always have.

“For me, food isn’t just about sustenance, it can be a vehicle of change. It is about feeding people and nourishing their souls. This is why I am thrilled to be supporting Action Against Hunger’s campaign, a charity that I have been supporting since my very first supper club.”

During September and October restaurants are adding a £1 voluntary donation to their diners’ table bill. The global humanitarian organisation is hoping to involve more than 500 restaurants and raise more than £550,000.

This would be enough money to provide treatment for over 13,000 children facing life-threatening hunger. More than 5,000 children under the age of five die as a result of hunger every day.

The campaign has been running for over a decade and has raised more than £3million to date for starving children. With this money 120,000 emergency kitchen kits could be provided to those in need.

Matthew White, director of fundraising & communications at Action Against Hunger, added: “It’s fantastic that so many chefs and restaurants have signed up to support the campaign.

“We need to recognise that hunger is on the rise and that governments need to be doing more to support communities that are paying the price of climate change. Where better to start this conversation than around the dinner table.”
